Police dismiss Inspector, suspend 2 ASPs over $3,000 extortion

The Rivers State Police Command has suspended two Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) and dismissed one Inspector from the Force for allegedly extorting $3,000 from two persons at gunpoint.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

Iringe-Koko noted that Inspector Michael Odey was dismissed on February 7, while ASP Doubara Edonyabo and ASP Talent Mungo had their case files sent to the police headquarters for further review.

She said: “Edonyabo and Mungo’s cases were forwarded to the police headquarters due to their ranks requiring approval from the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission (PSC).

“Consequently, the PSC has now officially authorised the suspension of Edonyabo and Mungu, effective from February 29, 2024.

“Both officers will face the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which is responsible for addressing disciplinary issues involving senior officers.”

Police declare Inspector wanted for murder

The police spokesperson promised that the command would provide regular updates on the trial of the two officers, adding: “This decisive course of action serves as a strong deterrent to any police officer who may contemplate engaging in misconduct in the course of their duty.

“We unequivocally reaffirm our unwavering commitment to upholding the fundamental principles of credible policing in the state.

“The Commissioner of Police in Rivers, CP Olatunji Disu, remains steadfast in his dedication to maintaining discipline among officers.”

Iringe-Koko urged the people of Rivers State to report any form of misconduct by any officer, assuring that the informant’s identity would be kept confidential.

The $3,000 was extorted from a yet-to-be-identified man in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

It was gathered that the man was whisked by the policemen from Port Harcourt to outside the state and was forced to pay the sum.

The arrest followed a revelation from an X user, Harrison Gwamnishu, who stated: “Police officers attached to Rivers State Police Command left Port Harcourt to Aba, Abia State, arrested the man, took him to Bayelsa State and entered Ughelli, Delta State.

“After paying $3,000, they moved him (the man) back to Port Harcourt and dumped him.”
