Police impound 172 motorcycles, tricycles over ban violations in Kano

The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has stepped up enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycle operations and the restriction on tricycle movements at night within the Kano metropolis.

The command said that between January 1 and 7, 2026, a total of 172 vehicles—comprising 104 commercial motorcycles (Achaba/Okada) and 68 tricycles—were impounded for violating the directives.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command disclosed that 172 suspects were arrested during the enforcement operations and subsequently charged to court for prosecution.

The statement quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, as commending residents for their cooperation and understanding, while also applauding the joint security teams for their commitment to the exercise.

He specifically acknowledged the contributions of the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA) and other security agencies involved in enforcing the measures.

The police reiterated that the ban on the use of motorcycles for commercial passenger services, as well as the restriction of tricycles from operating between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., remains in force across the metropolis.

Members of the public were urged to comply with the regulations to avoid arrest and prosecution.

The affected areas include Kano Municipal, Gwale, Dala, Fagge, Nassarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo (Jido area) and Dawakin Kudu Local Government Areas, covering Tamburawa, Gurjiya and Jido wards.

Residents were also encouraged to report violations or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines: 08032419754, 08123821575 and 09029292926.

The Kano State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of lives and property, assuring the public that enforcement operations will continue to ensure strict compliance with the ban and restriction.
