Insecurity: NAF, US officials hold talks to accelerate delivery of helicopters

Senior officers of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF have met with top United States Government officials and representatives of Bell Textron to accelerate the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters for Nigeria.

The engagement took place during a Programme Management Review meeting led by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, from January 5 to 6, 2026, in San Diego, California, United States.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the meeting focused on reviewing the progress of the helicopter acquisition programme and identifying measures to ensure timely delivery of the platforms.

According to the statement, Air Marshal Aneke said the review was designed to strengthen programme oversight, ensure accountability and guarantee adherence to agreed timelines and budgetary provisions.

He described the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters as a critical boost to the operational capability of the Nigerian Air Force, in line with his command philosophy of building a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive airpower in support of national security objectives.

The CAS expressed appreciation to the United States Government and Bell Textron for their cooperation, professionalism and transparency throughout the acquisition process, noting that the structured review reflects the NAF’s emphasis on discipline, accountability and results.

He further described the helicopter programme as a reflection of the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States, stressing that it underscores a shared commitment to regional and global security based on mutual trust and shared values.

Air Marshal Aneke assured the US team of the NAF’s sense of urgency and commitment to ensuring the helicopters are delivered within the shortest possible time, while charging the programme management team to ensure production is completed on schedule and within budget.

He also thanked President Bola Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support to the Nigerian Air Force, noting that the helicopters would significantly enhance the Service’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency and mission readiness.

According to him, the advanced capabilities of the AH-1Z helicopters will enable the NAF to carry out precise operations, minimise collateral damage and provide timely support to ground forces, thereby saving lives and protecting property.

The CAS reassured Nigerians of the Air Force’s commitment to combating terrorism and criminality with professionalism and accountability, while maintaining public trust.

Nigeria’s purchase of the 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters was approved by the United States Government in April 2022.

The $455 million production and delivery contract was later awarded to Bell Textron by the US Department of Defence in March 2024.
