Police recover 500 live ammunition from gun runners in Niger

The Niger State Police Commissioner, CP Monday Bala Kuryas, has paraded three suspected gun runners and recovered over 500 live ammunition from them.

The Commissioner, Monday Bala Kuryas, made the disclosure while parading the suspects at the Police Headquarters in Minna on Thursday.

He stated that both Muhammadu Bello (32) and Nura Umar (30), who is the driver,  from Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State, were arrested by the Police on patrol along Makera-Mokwa road in their vehicle.

The commissioner stated that the said driver refused to stop at the checkpoint for a routine check and after a hot chase by the Police team to Sabon Makera village; the driver and his accomplice abandoned the vehicle and took to their heels.

He said: “The two suspects were later arrested with the help of the community. During the search of the vehicle, the following items were recovered: two AK-47 rifles, 16 magazines, 417 live ammunition of 7.62 calibre, 150 RPG live ammunition.”

Kuryas also disclosed that during interrogation, suspects confessed to the crime and claimed that the arms were being taken from Sokoto to one Yellow at Mokwa.

The commissioner further explained that the third suspect, one Habib Sani (25) of Kanti village, Mashegu LGA was earlier arrested in possession of 14 locally fabricated guns.

The guns comprised of six double barrel and eight triple barrel guns concealed in a sack bag while on transit in a commercial vehicle from Kanti village to Guffanti, New-Bussa Borgu LGA.

The CP added that the cases are under investigation while suspects will be arraigned in court for prosecution as soon as investigation is concluded.
