Police recover hand grenade from Maiduguri drainage

The Borno State Police Command has recovered an unexploded hand grenade from a drainage slab in the Moduganari area of Maiduguri, the state capital.

The explosive device was discovered on Saturday and safely removed by operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Base 13, Maiduguri.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, said in a statement that the police received a report about the suspected explosive at about 12:40 p.m. on August 15, 2026.

According to him, Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid directed the EOD-CBRN team to immediately respond to the location.

“Acting on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, following a report received at about 1240hrs on 15 August 2026 regarding a suspected UXO found on a drainage slab in Moduganari area, operatives of the EOD-CBRN Base 13, Maiduguri, promptly mobilised to the scene and safely recovered the item,” Daso said.

He said the recovered hand grenade had been secured for further examination as investigations continued to determine its origin and how it ended up at the location.

The police spokesman commended residents for promptly alerting the authorities, saying their vigilance helped prevent possible harm.

He urged members of the public not to touch, move or tamper with suspected explosive devices but to immediately notify security agencies.

“The Borno State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and urges continued cooperation and timely reporting of suspicious objects or activities,” Daso said.
