Police summon Osun senator over ‘kill Accord’ comment

The Osun State Police Command has summoned Senator Francis Fadahunsi over his viral remarks in which he was alleged to have urged supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to “kill” members of the Accord Party.

Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, was reportedly invited by the police following public outrage over the comments ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.

The remarks, which were made in Yoruba and circulated widely on social media, allegedly contained instructions to APC supporters to attack members of the rival Accord Party during the electoral process.

The police invitation comes amid heightened concerns over political violence ahead of the election.

Fadahunsi has since denied advocating violence, explaining through his media office that his use of the phrase “kill Accord” was political and metaphorical, referring to defeating the party at the ballot box.

He said he had consistently advocated a peaceful election and urged political actors and voters to maintain law and order.

The senator also called on security agencies to ensure that voters are allowed to exercise their constitutional rights without intimidation.

The police are expected to question Fadahunsi over the circumstances surrounding the remarks and determine whether they constitute an offence under relevant laws.
