Ramadan: Jigawa approves shorter working hours for workers

The Jigawa State Government has announced a reduction in official working hours for civil servants in observance of the 2026 Ramadan fast.

The decision, approved by Governor Umar Namadi, was conveyed in a statement signed by the State Head of Civil Service, Muhammad Dagaceri, and released to journalists in Dutse by the Public Relations Officer in the Office of the Head of Service, Ismaila Dutse.

Under the new arrangement, civil servants will work from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, instead of the usual 5:00 p.m. closing time. On Fridays, working hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in line with existing practice.

Dagaceri said the adjustment is aimed at easing the burden on workers during the holy month, allowing them more time for spiritual activities and preparation for iftar, the breaking of fast.

“The adjustment in working hours is expected to boost productivity and morale among civil servants during the holy month,” he stated, urging workers to use the period to pray for peace, stability and economic prosperity in the state and the country.

Some civil servants who spoke in separate interviews welcomed the development, describing it as thoughtful and timely.

Ahmed Danladi, a staff member of the Ministry of Education, said the reduced hours would enable workers to balance their official duties with religious obligations. Similarly, Rafi’u Abdullahi of the Jigawa State Water Board said the move would help employees better manage their time and focus on spiritual growth.

Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, charity and spiritual reflection.
