The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Galaxy Backbone (GBB) have signed a strategic partnership to transform Nigerian universities and public institutions with sustainable electricity and reliable internet access.

The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday in Abuja, aims to drive economic growth, promote financial inclusion, and support Nigeria’s digital economy by delivering essential infrastructure to educational and government institutions.

Managing Director of REA, Alhaji Abba Aliyu, emphasized the critical role of electricity in fostering socio-economic development, stating that Nigeria loses an estimated $25 billion annually due to inadequate power supply. He noted that the REA is already deploying hybrid mini-grids in universities across the country to provide sustainable and uninterrupted electricity.

“We are planting the seed for the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises across Nigeria,” Aliyu said. “By powering public institutions, we are enhancing governance, reducing operational costs, and enabling digital transformation.”

Aliyu stressed that the integration of electricity, internet access, and digital services would improve research, innovation, and the quality of life for students and academic staff in universities. He also revealed that the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, which has already received initial funding, will be expanded to all federal universities and public institutions nationwide.

“Imagine the possibilities when universities enjoy uninterrupted electricity and internet—improved innovation, better research, and efficient administration,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of Galaxy Backbone, Managing Director Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju praised the partnership as a model for inter-agency collaboration in advancing President Bola Tinubu’s digital transformation agenda. He noted that digital development cannot occur in isolation and must be supported by stable energy systems.

“Bringing energy and digital connectivity together is a powerful move,” Adeyanju said. “REA is the perfect partner, having shown excellence in delivering energy access to rural and underserved communities.”

He added that GBB would work with REA to empower university hostels and facilities with solar energy solutions alongside fiber-optic internet infrastructure.

The collaboration will also extend to local government areas, aiming to revolutionize grassroots governance and bridge the urban-rural digital divide by enabling digital services, research, and innovation at all levels.
