Reps suspend plenary over contractors’ protest

The House of Representatives has suspended its plenary for one week following a protest by indigenous contractors demanding payment for executed government projects.

The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Kabiru Maipalace (APC, Zamfara), who urged lawmakers to halt sittings until the Federal Government settles outstanding debts from the 2024 and 2025 budgets.

Earlier on Tuesday, protesting contractors barricaded the National Assembly complex in Abuja, blocking access and delaying the day’s proceedings. They vowed to continue their protest for seven days until their payments are made.

During the session, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided, held an emergency closed-door meeting after lawmakers expressed frustration over the government’s failure to honour its payment commitments despite repeated assurances from President Bola Tinubu and relevant ministers.

The Minority Leader lamented that the non-payment of local contractors was worsening economic hardship and fueling public discontent.

Following deliberations, the House issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ministers of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, and the Accountant-General of the Federation to clear verified debts owed to indigenous contractors and commence full implementation of the 2025 budget.

Maipalace then moved a motion for a one-week suspension of plenary to allow time for the Executive to act on the payment directive.

Supporting the motion, House Committee Chairman on Rules and Business, Francis Waive, noted that contractors had vowed to continue their blockade, making it difficult for lawmakers to access the premises.

Deputy Speaker Kalu quipped, “So, members arrived late today because the road was blocked by contractors, and you don’t want a repeat next week?” to which Waive responded, “Definitely, Mr Speaker.”

The House unanimously adopted the motion, adjourned plenary for one week, and directed its leadership to engage the Executive to ensure an immediate resolution of the issue.
