Seaman: How I killed ex-naval chief’s son in Abuja

The operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested a Nigerian Navy Seaman, AbdulRasheed Muhammad, for the alleged murder of Aminu Ibrahim, the son of former Chief of Naval Staff, Ishaya Ibrahim, in Abuja.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

Ibrahim, who died in January 2022, served as the Chief of Naval Staff between August 2008 and September 2010.

His son, Aminu, was killed in the Maitama area of Abuja on August 18, 2024.

Igweh said Muhammad confessed to killing Aminu and snatching his SUV Prado at Maitama.

The police commissioner said the suspect was arrested during a routine stop and search operation in Abuja on August 23.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was on guard duty at the residence of the ex-naval chief and that the vehicle belonged to Aminu.

Igweh disclosed that the suspect confessed to being a member of a three-man gang specialising in armed robbery and snatching luxury vehicles.

Igweh said: “About two weeks ago, Aminu Ibrahim, the son of Vice Admiral I. I. Ibrahim (retd), a former Chief of Naval Staff, was robbed and killed in the Maitama area of Abuja and his Prado SUV was taken.

“I want to inform you that AbdulRasheed Muhammad, a serving Nigerian Navy personnel, committed the murder.

“He has confessed to the crime, and we have recovered the Prado Jeep.”

The police commissioner stated that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining gang members, adding that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Muhammad, while speaking to journalists, disclosed that he is a seaman in the navy and posted to the residence of the former Chief of Naval Staff.

He confessed to shooting Aminu and stealing his car, saying: “I followed him with my gun. Along the way, he stopped to check his ATM, as if he was going to buy something.

“I thought maybe I was going to escort him to a market or somewhere. Then, when I came out through the other door, I shot him, took the car, and left.

“I’m a guard and a seaman in the navy. He did not do anything to me; I killed him to steal his car.”
