Security tightened at Kano Govt House over backlash to Gov Yusuf’s APC defection

There is an increased security presence around and inside the Kano State Government House amid rising tensions over Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s alleged plan to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reports say the heightened security comes as political reactions intensify across the state over the governor’s anticipated defection, which has divided opinion.

Some supporters believe the move could strengthen Kano’s political influence and advance Governor Yusuf’s ambitions within the APC, while others see it as a betrayal of the NNPP’s mandate and loyalty to its leaders.

Officials aligned with the governor have confirmed plans to join the APC and say they will meet with key figures, including the NNPP’s leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to discuss the transition.

However, the NNPP’s state leadership has expressed strong opposition to the defection and is urging party members to remain loyal.

The governor’s expected defection — previously scheduled to take place this week — appears to have been postponed to allow further consultations with political stakeholders and reconcile differences within the party.

Political observers say the outcome of this unfolding situation could significantly reshape Kano’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, affecting both party strength and alliances in the northern region.
