A former Kano State governor and Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially defected to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) amidst cheering of multitude of supporters.
The official declaration sealed off weeks of speculation and political pilgrimage to Shekarau’s residence between the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, stalwarts of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on one hand, and ex-Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and his emissary on the other hand.
In what becomes a historic alliance that would change the course of Kano politics, the former two arch-rivals have teamed up against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Ganduje and APC national leaders had intensified efforts in the last few weeks to pressure Shekarau to remain in the APC.
The efforts, however, failed as the former governor dumped the ruling party for NNPP.
