Sokoto to prosecute 30 contractors over abandoned market projects

The Sokoto State Government has resolved to prosecute at least 30 contractors who allegedly collected mobilization fees for market construction projects but abandoned their sites without execution.

The decision was reached at the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, with members declaring that the era of reckless contractors shortchanging the public was over.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Nasiru Mohammed Binji, said the contracts had been terminated and both civil and criminal actions would be pursued to recover misappropriated funds.

“Those who think they can collect money and walk away will face the full weight of the law. Accountability is non-negotiable,” Binji stated.

Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Barr. Nasiru Aliyu Dantsoho, described contract abandonment as economic sabotage that would be crushed without compromise.

Meanwhile, the Council approved fresh projects worth billions of naira, including the renovation of nine general hospitals, continuation of key road projects, and establishment of a modern livestock services centre.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar Wurno, announced that hospital renovation contracts valued at several billions of naira had been awarded, each with a six-month completion deadline. He warned contractors against delays or abandonment.

The approved hospital projects include: General Hospital Silame (₦308.7m), Wamakko (₦292.9m), Binji (₦297.5m), Kware (₦350.4m), Goronyo (₦331.2m), Gada (₦313.3m), and Illela (₦590.2m) — the latter attracting higher cost due to fire damage repairs and completion of an abandoned structure.

On infrastructure, the Teshe–Illela–More road project inherited from the past administration will continue at an additional cost of ₦2.4bn, with the same contractor retained to prevent delays.

The livestock services centre is expected to improve animal health, enhance productivity, and strengthen the livestock value chain for local and export markets.

According to the government, punishing errant contractors while awarding credible ones demonstrates Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and sustainable development.

Officials say the crackdown will restore public confidence, deter future infractions, and ensure taxpayers’ money is used for its intended purpose.
