Less than 24 hours after a surprise visit by Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, to two hospitals in blackout in Maiduguri, the state capital, a solar system has been installed at the facilities as an alternative source of power.

The Star had reported that Zulum, on Friday night, visited Umaru Shehu Ultra Modern Hospital and Fatima Ali Sheriff Maternity Hospital, both in Maiduguri, and discovered that the hospitals were in blackout for days.

The governor had just returned from Abuja and decided to drive from the airport straight to the hospitals after he got a hint from private sources that the hospitals were in blackout for days.

He later ordered the installation of solar system in the hospitals.

However, the system was installed on Saturday following a directive issued by Governor Zulum on Friday night.

Announcing the development, the state government, in a statement made available to The Star on Sunday, said technicians of the sate’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, carried out the installation under the directive of their Commissioner, Dr. Babagana Mustapha Mallambe, who first sought permission from his counterpart in charge of the Ministry of Health.

The government noted that the solar system with relevant number of batteries and solar panels was fully installed with lights restored in the hospitals.
