South West PDP elects new leaders, backs Abuja convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West has elected new members of its Zonal Working Committee, reaffirming unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The congress, held on Thursday at the Airport Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, produced Engr. Deji Doherty as Chairman; Oluwole Omotaje as Secretary; Obe Gbolaro as Treasurer; David Adedamola as Legal Adviser; Gbadamosi Babatunde as Financial Secretary; and Akinloye Oyeniyi as Publicity Secretary.

Other elected officers include Wale Ogunmodede, Adefemi Clement, Folake Marcus-Oluwakayode, and Tolulope Awoniyi, who emerged as Youth Leader.

According to a statement by Oyeniyi, the exercise was peaceful and symbolised a renewed commitment to internal democracy and cohesion within the party. He said the zone unanimously endorsed the PDP national convention scheduled for March 29–30 in Abuja, describing it as an opportunity to showcase the party’s strength as Nigeria’s leading opposition platform.

“The Congress commended the National Leader, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, the national leadership, and South West stakeholders for holding forth this far, and unanimously endorsed the forthcoming national convention in Abuja,” Oyeniyi said.

The convention is expected to produce new national officers and set the direction of the party as it prepares for the 2027 elections.

Oyeniyi expressed optimism that the PDP will emerge from the convention more united and prepared to reclaim power. “We are determined and focused on winning across all levels in 2027,” he stated.

The South West zone, a critical bloc in PDP’s national structure, has strengthened its position with the successful conduct of the congress, with stakeholders expressing renewed confidence in the party’s prospects.
