Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde
The South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has criticised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over comments referencing “Operation Wetie,” a violent episode in Nigeria’s political history, and distanced itself from a recent opposition leaders’ summit held in Ibadan.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Akinloye Oyeniyi, the party described the governor’s remarks as inappropriate and unbecoming of a public office holder.
Makinde had referenced “Operation Wetie”—a term associated with political violence in Nigeria’s Western Region in the 1960s—during his address at the gathering of opposition figures in Oyo State.
Reacting, the South-West PDP warned against any rhetoric that could be interpreted as promoting political violence, insisting that the region should not be turned into a theatre of political conflict.
The party also disowned the summit, describing it as a coalition meeting that does not represent the official position of the PDP or the broader opposition.
According to Oyeniyi, the event was organised to serve personal political interests, alleging that it was aimed at advancing certain ambitions ahead of future elections.
He further criticised the gathering, calling it a “jamboree” and urging prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to distance themselves from what he described as unnecessary controversy.
The party commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo for not attending the event, saying his absence underscored its lack of broad legitimacy.
Addressing Makinde directly, the PDP cautioned against actions it said could deepen political tension, adding that the people of the South-West would reject any attempt to destabilise the region.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to providing credible opposition and maintaining democratic values, while rejecting participation in what it described as politically motivated gatherings.
