SSANU president raises the alarm over hardship in Eid message

The National President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Mohammed Ibrahim, has expressed concern over worsening economic hardship, urging government action as Muslims celebrate Eid-el-Fitr nationwide.

In a Sallah message issued on Friday, Ibrahim congratulated union members, the Muslim Ummah, and Nigerians on the successful completion of Ramadan, describing the holy month as a period of discipline, sacrifice, and spiritual devotion.

He noted that fasting reflects deep submission to God’s will, while Eid-el-Fitr serves as a reminder of faith, obedience, and collective responsibility—especially during difficult times.

The SSANU leader also extended condolences to victims of recent violence in Borno State, particularly in Maiduguri, following reported bombings. He said the incidents underscore the urgent need to strengthen security and protect lives.

Highlighting the economic situation, Ibrahim lamented the growing strain on university workers due to rising inflation and the high cost of living. He commended members for their resilience but warned that their sacrifices should not be overlooked.

He called on the Federal Government to fast-track ongoing negotiations with SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), stressing the importance of fairness and sincerity in the process.

According to him, delays in concluding the renegotiation only worsen uncertainty and weaken confidence among workers.

Ibrahim further urged all levels of government to implement policies that provide real relief, including improved welfare packages, wage adjustments, and measures that restore dignity to labour.

He emphasised that national development depends on how well workers are treated, while calling for unity across the country to achieve stability and progress.

Encouraging hope, he urged members to remain steadfast and committed, praying for peace, progress, and a better future for Nigeria.
