Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, well known as Sunday Igboho, has regained freedom after two years of trial by the Beninese government.
Sunday Igboho announced his release from protective custody in Benin Republic on Sunday, October 8, 2023, saying he was now legally free to leave the country for Nigeria and other countries.
“I am now free to return to Nigeria and visit any country in the world. I have fulfilled all the legal conditions attached to my bail a few years back and I am coming home to Nigeria, my country of origin, any moment from now.
“I can confirm to you that I am now free to come back to Nigeria. There is no legal encumbrance again. Even though I have been living in Cotonou for some time, I can confirm to you categorically that I have now secured the liberty to leave Cotonou for Nigeria,” the Yoruba secessionist leader told Nigerian Tribune.
The Star recalls that Sunday Igboho was arrested alongside his wife, Ropo, on July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou while attempting to flee to Germany.

Sunday Igboho’s wife was later released while the embattled Yoruba Nation activist was returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou.
This came after the Beninese court ordered that the Yoruba secessionist leader be remanded in a prison facility in the Francophone West African nation while further investigations were carried out on the case against the agitator.
After being declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS), he was accused of stockpiling arms to destabilise Nigeria.
He, however, denied the allegation.
Igboho’s counsel, Yomi Alliyu, SAN, later announced his release, noting that the Yoruba Nation agitator’s release was under the agreement that he won’t leave the medical centre or Cotonou for any reason.
