Suspected killer of Jonathan’s aide, Gulak, arrested in Imo

The operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested one of the suspected killers of Ahmed Gulak, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a former political adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mike Abattam, made the disclosure in Owerri, the state capital on Monday while speaking to newsmen during the parade of some suspects arrested by the police

Abattam disclosed the name of the arrested suspect as Anosike Chimobi from Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State.

The arrest of Chimobi comes one year after the death of Gulak.

It would be recalled that the former presidential aide was murdered by gunmen on May 30, 2021, during a visit to Imo State.

He was reportedly trailed from his hotel room to the spot where he was killed around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area, close to the Sam Mbakwe Airport Road in Owerri.

Parading the arrested suspects, Abattam said Chimobi had been on the trail of the command since the killing of Gulak last year, adding that the suspect escaped during a gun battle between police operatives and his gang members at Aboh Mbaise shortly after the murder of the APC chieftain where five of the suspects were killed.

The police spokesperson further stated that among those paraded were members of the gang who burnt the home of the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor.

Speaking to newsmen, Chimobi said he was a commercial bus driver and not a member of the criminal gang.

The suspect further disclosed that the killers of Gulak approached him to convey them in his vehicle, adding that he attempted to resist but later gave in after they threatened to kill him.

He said he drove the criminals to Owerri where they blocked Gulak’s vehicle which was on its way to the airport.

Chimobi revealed that they shot the Gulak after he resisted the demand by the gunmen that he should come down from the vehicle.

The suspect added that they later engaged police operatives in a gun duel before the other vehicle conveying them somersaulted and caught fire.

Items recovered from the arrested suspects include guns, assorted charms, and a live snake, among others.
