Tambuwal dumps PDP, joins ADC

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Tambuwal announced his decision in a statement posted on X in the early hours of Thursday, stating that he had already communicated his resignation in writing to his ward chairman before formally joining the ADC alongside his supporters and political associates.

“Today, after deep reflection and consultations, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, and I have communicated my resignation to my ward chairman in writing,” he said.

The former governor attributed his exit from the PDP to the party’s persistent internal crisis, leadership disputes, and growing divisions.

According to him, the challenges within the party have weakened the unity and direction that once defined it, making it increasingly difficult for him to remain.

Tambuwal acknowledged the role the PDP played in his political journey, which saw him serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later complete two terms as Governor of Sokoto State.

However, he said the internal deterioration within the party had made continued membership untenable.

Explaining his choice of the ADC as his new political platform, Tambuwal said he believes the party offers a stronger vehicle for democratic progress in Nigeria.

“I am convinced that this decision is guided by my belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,” he stated.

Tambuwal also reaffirmed his commitment to democracy, justice, and national unity.

His defection comes amid a wave of political realignments, including the recent move by former presidential candidate Peter Obi to the ADC, a development that observers say is strengthening the party’s profile ahead of future elections.
