Tambuwal granted bail as EFCC, opposition trade blame over arrest

Former Sokoto State governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, was on Tuesday evening granted administrative bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following his arrest over alleged financial misconduct.

EFCC sources said the bail would allow the commission to “perfect its case” before his arraignment.

The arrest drew sharp criticism from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who accused the EFCC of acting as a political tool for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to intimidate opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.

ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi alleged that the EFCC’s probe of Tambuwal, former Imo governor Emeka Ihedioha, and ADC chairman David Mark was part of a coordinated campaign to discredit coalition leaders.

The PDP’s Sokoto chapter described Tambuwal’s detention as a “politically motivated fishing expedition,” citing his record of fiscal discipline.

Responding in a Facebook post, the EFCC rejected claims of bias, insisting its investigations target politically exposed persons “from every divide” and stressing that corruption allegations have no statute of limitations.

“Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption.

There is no sacred cow,” the commission stated, urging Nigerians to ignore “diversionary political statements” and trust in its mandate.
