Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has said the North-West geopolitical zone would be the real battleground for the 2023 presidential election in the country.

Tambuwal said since no “serious” presidential candidate emerged from the North-West region ahead of the 2023 general election, the major parties would vigorously campaign in the region.

The governor stated that the region would be a battleground for the leading parties due to the highest number of registered voters, saying the zone could determine the outcome of the next year’s presidential election.

Governor Tambuwal said this in Sokoto when the interim leadership of Atiku United Front, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku support group, visited him at the Government House on Tuesday.

He said PDP would support such groups in the zone to enhance the potential of the party in the zone.

The governor, who admitted that the zone has suffered the scourge of terrorism and banditry more than other regions recently, vowed that PDP would address the problem of insecurity in the country as enunciated in the campaign agenda of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Tambuwal further commended former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, for initiating the group.

On his part, the Director-General of the group, Shehu Kura, said they decided to first visit Tambuwal to acquaint him with the mission of the group because of his leadership position in the party as the only PDP governor in the zone.

He said the group would work to ensure the success of the PDP at all levels in the zone.

Kura, who commended Tambuwal for his patriotism and foresight in stepping down for Atiku to save the party and democracy in the country, described the governor’s action as selfless decisions lacking in many politicians in the country.
