Three injured in overnight road crashes across Lagos — LASEMA

Three people were injured in separate road accidents recorded across Lagos State in the early hours of Saturday, while emergency responders prevented any fatalities, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has said.

In a statement issued by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, LASEMA said the incidents occurred at Olupese Bus Stop inward Oshodi, Aswani Bus Stop inward Iyana Isolo, and Oba Ogunji Road in Ikeja.

According to the agency, the first incident occurred at about 12:07 a.m. when a truck transporting granite broke down after its rear tyre became trapped in a pothole at Olupese Bus Stop, obstructing traffic toward Oshodi.

Preliminary findings indicated that the poor condition of the road contributed to the incident. No injuries or fatalities were recorded.

LASEMA said its Eagle Response Team immediately diverted traffic and deployed its heavy-duty recovery vehicle, Super Metro, to remove the stranded truck and restore traffic flow.

Less than an hour later, at about 12:59 a.m., a Toyota Sienna with registration number ABJ-515DQ collided with an oncoming truck at Aswani Bus Stop, forcing the truck off the road and onto a culvert.

The agency said three occupants of the Sienna—two women and one man—sustained injuries and received emergency treatment at the scene before they were transported to hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

Following the rescue operation, the truck was recovered and handed over to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), while the Sienna was released to officers of the Aswani Police Station.

A third accident occurred at about 1:19 a.m. on Oba Ogunji Road, involving a Ministry of Environment concrete mixer truck and a Volkswagen bus with registration number FKJ 424KA.

According to LASEMA, preliminary investigations showed that excessive speeding by the Volkswagen bus caused the collision. No injuries or deaths were recorded, while emergency responders carried out mechanical repairs on the mixer truck before clearing both vehicles from the road.

Commenting on the incidents, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, commended the coordinated response of emergency agencies, noting that swift intervention helped minimise the impact of the crashes.

He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving road safety and reducing traffic-related fatalities through investments in emergency response equipment, personnel training and inter-agency collaboration.

Oke-Osanyintolu also urged motorists to obey speed limits, drive responsibly and promptly report damaged roads to the relevant authorities to help prevent avoidable accidents.
