Tinubu appoints new education officials, renews tenures across key institutions

President Bola Tinubu has made a series of new appointments and tenure renewals across four federal education institutions, including the National Examinations Council, the National Board for Technical Education, the Federal Polytechnic N’yak-Shendam, and the National Library of Nigeria.

For NECO, Tinubu appointed Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu as Chairman of the Governing Board while retaining the current registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi. Adelabu, a retired professor of educational administration from Obafemi Awolowo University, previously served as Deputy Governor of Ekiti State between 2013 and 2014 and chaired the NBTE from 2018 to 2021.

The President appointed Prof. Babatunde Salako as Chairman of the NBTE. Salako, described as a globally respected researcher, served as Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research from 2016 to 2024, during which the institute recorded expanded international collaborations and improved research governance.

On April 10, Tinubu separately reappointed Prof. Idris M. Bugaje as NBTE Executive Secretary for a second and final term of five years.

At the Federal Polytechnic N’yak-Shendam in Plateau State, Engr. Dr. Bongfa Binfa was appointed Rector for a single five-year term. Binfa, a PhD holder in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, previously served as Deputy Rector (Academic) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny.

He succeeds Dr. Mukaila Zakari Ya’u, whose tenure expired on March 16, 2026. His appointment followed a public advertisement exercise conducted in September 2025.

Tinubu also renewed the tenure of Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi as Director-General of the National Library of Nigeria for a final five-year term.

First appointed in September 2021, Anunobi has overseen several reforms repositioning the library as a technology-driven institution, including the development of the National Repository of Nigeria and the National Virtual Library.

The renewal is expected to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms and the completion of the library’s Abuja headquarters project.
