President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose influence continues to resonate across Nigeria, Africa, and the wider world.
In a statement issued on March 4 by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Obasanjo’s courage, sacrifices, and longstanding service to the nation.
Tinubu noted that Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, during which he handed over power to a civilian government in 1979. He also recalled Obasanjo’s return to leadership as the first civilian president of the Fourth Republic, serving from 1999 to 2007.
The President highlighted Obasanjo’s historic experiences, including his role in leading troops during the civil war to preserve Nigeria’s unity and his imprisonment for opposing military dictatorship. He also commended the former leader’s sustained advocacy for Africa’s political and economic advancement.
According to the statement, Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s continued contributions to national discourse through his books and public interventions, describing them as reflections of deep patriotism and commitment to nation-building.
The President prayed for continued good health, strength, and wisdom for the former president as he marks his 89th birthday and continues to serve the nation and humanity.
