President Bola Tinubu will on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, depart Abuja for Dakar, Senegal, to attend the inauguration of Senegal’s President-elect, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, on Monday, April 1.

Ngelale noted that the president’s trip is on the invitation of Senegal.

He stated that President Tinubu, who is the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, will join other regional leaders to witness the inauguration at Diamniadio Exhibition Centre on Tuesday.

The presidential spokesman said Tinubu will be accompanied on the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and other senior government officials.

Senegal court affirms Faye as president-elect

Ngelale added that the president will return to Nigeria after the conclusion of the inauguration.

The Star recalls that Senegal’s Constitutional Council, on Friday, March 29, confirmed the presidential election victory of Faye, paving the way for his inauguration as the country’s fifth president.

The top court validated provisional results announced last Wednesday based on vote tallies from 100 per cent of polling stations, adding that no objections had been raised by the other contenders.

44-year-old Faye, the opposition candidate, won more than 54 per cent of votes in last Sunday’s delayed presidential election, with ruling coalition candidate Amadou Ba taking over 35 per cent.

He will be sworn in to replace outgoing President Macky Sall on April 2.

Faye’s victory is the first time a Senegalese opposition candidate won the election in the first round since independence in 1960.
