Barring any last-minute changes, the immediate past governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, will be named as the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was gathered that the APC settled for Ganduje after the former governor alongside three incumbent governors elected on the platform of the ruling party met with President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday night.

The governors were Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who is the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), and Dapo Abiodun (Ogun).

It would be recalled that the APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Sen. Abubakar Kyari, on Monday, July 17, 2023, took over the control of the ruling party as acting national chairman.

The development followed the forced resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the APC National Chairman.

The party’s national secretary, Iyiola Omisore, a former deputy governor of Osun State, also resigned from his position.

It was however learned on Wednesday night that Ganduje will be named as interim national chairman of the APC, pending the conduct of the party’s convention later this year.

“It was on Monday that the issue of making Ganduje the chairman of the party started when the chairman of the PGF met with him in Abuja. Uzodimma told the former Kano State Governor of the president’s intention to make him the party’s chairman,” a presidency source at the meeting told Daily Trust.

He said the issue was finalised on Wednesday night when President Tinubu met Ganduje alongside the three governors, adding: “From all indications, the issue is sealed. He would first be announced as the interim national chairman before the convention of the party, where his appointment would be ratified.”

Meanwhile, the preferred candidate for the office of national secretary remains unknown as of press time.

A source, however, told The Star that the former governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola, is being considered as the party’s national secretary.
