Tinubu orders appointees seeking elective offices to resign before March 31

President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general election to step down from office on or before March 31, 2026.

The head of information and public relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dewan Goshit, announced this in a statement issued on Tuesday, March 17.

Goshit noted that the directive aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.

He noted that the order covers all presidential appointees who plan to participate in party primaries or seek nomination for elective offices.

Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executives of federal agencies, commissions, parastatals and government-owned companies.

Goshit added that all affected officials are expected to forward their resignation letters through the SGF’s office on or before the deadline.

Goshit said Tinubu stressed that the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral regulations, promoting transparency in the political process, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants.

He quoted Tinubu as also urging those concerned to strictly comply with the directive, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to credible elections and strong democratic institutions.
