Tinubu pledges support for agriculture, tourism at Argungu Festival

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday described the 61st Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival as proof of improved security and a return to normalcy in Kebbi State and across the country, pledging stronger federal backing for agriculture, tourism and rural development.

Speaking at the grand finale in Argungu, the President commended the state government for successfully hosting the four-day cultural event, which attracted more than 50,000 fishermen and visitors from Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

The festival featured fishing contests, cultural displays, water sports, traditional boxing and dance performances.

Tinubu said the peaceful and orderly conduct of the festival reflected progress made in tackling insecurity.

“The organisation and security arrangement show what is possible when leadership is purposeful and inclusive,” he said, assuring residents that ongoing collaboration between federal and state authorities and security agencies would further curb banditry and other threats.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting farmers, fishermen and rural communities, noting that Kebbi remained central to Nigeria’s food security drive.

He added that cultural events like Argungu help promote unity and boost tourism while projecting the country positively on the global stage.

Before attending the festival, Tinubu commissioned several infrastructure projects in Birnin Kebbi, including the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Secretariat Complex, a new motor park, major road projects and a college of nursing and midwifery.

Governor Nasir Idris thanked the President for honouring the state with his presence and reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustaining the festival as a platform for cultural preservation and economic growth.

He highlighted ongoing investments in roads, hospitals, schools, agriculture and civil service welfare.

The Emir of Argungu, Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, described the festival as a long-standing symbol of peace, reconciliation and unity among communities.

At the close of the fishing competition, Abubakar Usman from Maiyama Local Government Area emerged overall winner with a 59kg catch, earning ₦1 million and two new cars.

Abdullahi Garba from Argungu placed second with a 40kg fish and received ₦750,000, a car and a Hajj slot, while two contestants from Jigawa and Kogi states shared third place with 33kg catches, winning ₦1 million and a motorcycle each.

The winning fish were later presented to the President as souvenirs.
