Tinubu seeks Ekweremadu’s repatriation from UK prison

President Bola Tinubu has sent a high-level delegation to London to engage with UK authorities on the case of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who has been serving a jail term in the United Kingdom since March 2023.

It was gathered that the delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and the Attorney General of Federal and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, arrived in London on Monday, November 10, 2025.

The delegation held discussions with officials from the UK Ministry of Justice, to explore legal avenues and diplomatic solutions on Ekweremadu’s imprisonment.

Tuggar’s spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, confirmed the development on Tuesday, saying the presidential delegation was in London to consult with the UK authorities to explore possibilities of Ekeweremadu serving the remainder of his prison term in Nigeria.

The former Deputy Senate President, his wife, Beatrice, and medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, were jailed on May 5, 2023, for conspiring to traffic a 21-year-old man to the UK from Lagos for his organ.

The ex-Deputy Senate President was jailed for nine years and eight months, his wife was sentenced to four years and six months imprisonment, while Obeta received a 10-year prison term.

The presiding judge, Jeremy Johnson, declared that Beatrice should spend half of the sentence in custody and on licence for the rest of the sentence.

However, Beatrice was released from prison and returned to Nigeria in January 2025.
