Tonye Cole withdraws from Rivers APC governorship race

Tonye Patrick Cole has withdrawn from the Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary scheduled for Wednesday, citing the need to promote party unity and stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Cole announced his decision in a press statement on Wednesday, where he said the move followed consultations with his political associates, supporters, and other stakeholders after a recent meeting convened by the national leadership of the party.

He explained that discussions at the stakeholders’ meeting focused on strengthening cohesion within the Rivers APC and ensuring the emergence of a united front for the forthcoming primaries and the 2027 elections.

The former governorship aspirant said his decision was guided by patriotism and a desire to prioritise peace, unity, and the overall success of the party.

According to him, the withdrawal was not taken lightly but reflected a commitment to the long-term interests of both the party and Rivers State.

Cole appreciated his supporters, including youths, women groups, elders, and party faithful, for their loyalty and encouragement throughout his campaign.

He urged his supporters to remain calm and support the party’s leadership, while also pledging to work with whoever emerges as the APC governorship candidate in the state.

He further called for unity among party members and reaffirmed his commitment to the growth of the APC and the development of Rivers State.

Cole also expressed support for the party’s broader goals ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging members to work towards victory for all APC candidates.
