Trader jailed for stealing sheep

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, sentenced a 20-year-old trader, Abbas Mohammed, to one year imprisonment for stealing a sheep from a house in the state.

The prosecution Counsel, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported at the Mista-Ali Police Station on January 9 by the complainant, Abdul Mohammed.

Gokwat said Mohammed had a bunch of keys he carried around to steal from houses in the neighbourhood.

He said the trader was caught with the sheep and was arrested during an investigation by the police.

He said the trader committed the offence punishable under the provisions of the Plateau Penal Code Law.

Mohammed pleaded guilty to theft and also for having a bunch of keys which he used in gaining access to various houses.

After listening to Mohammed’s guilty plea, Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced the trader to one year imprisonment or a fine of N100,000.

Bokkos said the judgment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such illegal acts.
