Tragedy! Father loses five children in Benue

Tragedy struck in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State on Sunday evening as a father lost five of his six children in a boat mishap while returning from the farm.

According to local sources, the incident occurred near Obagaji community when the canoe conveying the man and his children capsized midstream.

The family was said to be returning home after harvesting cassava when the overloaded boat sank.

Of the seven people on board — the father and his six children — only the man and one child survived.

A resident identified as Ameh said local divers and volunteers immediately launched a rescue operation, but five of the children had already drowned.

“The whole community is in mourning; it’s one of the saddest incidents we’ve witnessed,” he said.

Confirming the tragedy, the Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin James, described the incident as heartbreaking.

He said preliminary reports indicated that the canoe was overloaded, which likely caused it to capsize.

James noted that the children’s mother, who did not join the trip, was devastated upon receiving the news. He extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents to adhere to safety guidelines when travelling on water.

Boat accidents have become frequent in Benue’s riverine communities, particularly in Agatu, Logo, and Buruku LGAs.

In 2024 alone, several fatal incidents were recorded — including one in Logo where 14 mourners drowned, and another in Agatu that claimed the lives of 20 traders.

Despite repeated tragedies, residents say many local ferries and canoes still operate without life jackets or proper safety oversight.

As of press time, the state police command had yet to release an official statement, while community leaders continue to appeal for stricter regulation of water transport to prevent further loss of lives.
