A heavy gun battle between troops and suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State has left casualties on both sides, security sources said on Monday.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the clash began when insurgents launched an attack on a military camp, prompting troops to engage them in a prolonged firefight.
Security operatives said exploitation of the camp was still ongoing following the encounter.
Items recovered from the insurgents’ positions inside the camp included bandoliers of PKT ammunition, one AK-47 rifle, one BHT machine gun, two mortar bombs, and four hand grenades.
According to the sources, blood stains and drag marks were also discovered outside the camp, indicating that some insurgents may have been wounded or killed during the clash.
In a related development, troops intercepted an injured BHT fighter within the community who was being brought toward the camp. The suspect reportedly attempted to flee, triggering another exchange of gunfire.
Sources said the situation is currently under control, with troops maintaining security around the area and carrying out follow-up operations to track fleeing insurgents.
Further details on casualties and operational outcomes are expected as clearance operations continue in the area.
