Troops neutralise bandits, rescues captives in Niger

Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised several armed bandits and rescued numerous captives during a coordinated operation in parts of Niger State.

Security sources said the operation was carried out across Eriya and A’ure communities in Mariga Local Government Area, as well as border communities in Magama Local Government Area.

The offensive targeted bandits believed to have relocated from the Ibbi–Zugurma axis of Kainji National Park. While moving from their former base in Ibbi Forest, the criminals reportedly attacked civilians along their route, killing some residents and abducting others, including victims they had previously held captive.

Troops from the Warari Forward Operating Base and Gulbin Boka FOB, operating from Kontagora Barracks, engaged the bandits in a series of coordinated assaults. Several terrorists were neutralised, while others fled with gunshot injuries, weakening their ability to regroup or launch further attacks.

The operation also resulted in the rescue of men, women and children who had been held by the bandits. Military sources described the mission as a strong display of discipline, operational superiority and commitment to protecting civilian lives.

The sources commended the troops for their bravery and professionalism, noting that their actions have helped restore confidence among residents of the affected communities.

Security agencies say efforts are ongoing to sustain pressure on criminal groups in the region, urging communities to cooperate with authorities to ensure lasting peace and stability.
