United States President Donald Trump
United States President Donald Trump has described Nigeria as “a disgrace”, saying the federal government failed to stop killings in the country.
Trump said this on Fox News Radio’s programme, ‘The Brian Kilmeade Show’, on Friday, November 21, 2025.
The president had earlier threatened military action in Nigeria over the alleged persecution of Christians in the country.
Trump said: “I think Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace. They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide. And I’m really angry about it.
“And we pay, you know, we give a lot of subsidy to Nigeria which we’re going to end up stopping.
“The government has done nothing. They are very ineffective. They’re killing Christians at will. And you know until I got involved in it two weeks ago — nobody even talked about it.”
Niger gov shuts schools, says number of abducted students not confirmed
Trump’s comments come amid recent mass killings and kidnappings in Nigeria.
On Friday, bandits attacked St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwarra Local Government Area of Niger State, abducting scores of students and staff members.
Other attacks this week include the kidnapping on Monday of 25 schoolgirls from a boarding school in Kebbi state and an attack on a church in Kwara state, in which a church official disclosed that 38 worshippers were taken by bandits.
The church official added that the gunmen had issued a ransom demand of N100 million per worshipper.
This week’s spate of attacks prompted President Bola Tinubu to cancel foreign trips to South Africa and Angola, where he was due to attend a G20 summit and an African Union-European Union summit.
Tinubu also dispatched a delegation led by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to the United States to meet U.S. lawmakers and government officials.
