U.S. President Donald Trump has released CCTV footage and images of a suspect who breached security and triggered a shooting scare at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night.
The footage, shared by Trump shortly before he addressed the media, shows the suspect running into the ballroom of the Washington Hilton and bypassing security metal detectors before armed agents moved to intercept him. Trump also shared images believed to show a shirtless man lying face down in the foyer with his hands restrained behind his back.
Describing the individual as a “would-be assassin,” Trump said the suspect was heavily armed and had breached a key security checkpoint before being stopped. The BBC quoted the president as saying the man “charged past a security checkpoint” carrying multiple weapons.
Trump added that one law enforcement officer was shot during the incident but survived after a bulletproof vest absorbed the impact.
The shooting triggered widespread panic at the high-profile event, forcing the evacuation of senior government officials, journalists, and other guests in attendance.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is in custody, with investigations into the motive and circumstances of the security breach ongoing.
