The United States Secret Service has launched an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.
The agency said it is working alongside the Metropolitan Police Department to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, which took place near a security screening area at the Washington Hilton.
Gunshots were reported close to the main magnetometer checkpoint used to screen guests, triggering a swift response from security personnel on duty.
Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s Chief of Communications, confirmed in a statement that all protected individuals, including the president and first lady, were safe following the incident.
Authorities said one suspect has been taken into custody, while efforts are ongoing to assess the condition of others involved.
Guglielmi noted that security teams remain on the ground gathering information, adding that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
“We will provide updates as they become available. Our teams are actively assessing the situation and investigating. All of our protectees are safe,” he said.
The incident has heightened concerns over security arrangements at major public events in the US capital, with officials expected to review existing protocols as inquiries continue.
