The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has arrested two men for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit drugs to inmates at the Nomansland Court Complex in Kano.
The suspects — 25-year-old Usman Khalid and 24-year-old Bello Musa Ahmed, both residents of the Tsamiya (Brigade) area — were apprehended by correctional officers attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Goron Dutse.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, Musbahu Lawan, said the men were caught while trying to throw suspected Indian hemp and other prohibited substances to inmates during court proceedings.
He explained that the arrest followed increased security surveillance during the movement of inmates to and from court — a period often targeted by individuals attempting to breach custodial security.
The Command cautioned the public against mingling with inmates during court sessions, stressing that such actions pose serious security risks and carry legal consequences.
Controller of the Command, Ado Inuwa, directed that the suspects — alongside the recovered exhibits — be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.
Reaffirming its commitment to rehabilitation and security, the NCoS said it would not tolerate any activity capable of compromising safety within custodial centres and court premises, and urged residents to support efforts to maintain law and order across the state.
