Two weeks after 2027 elections, insecurity will stop — Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has linked the country’s rising insecurity to the build-up to the 2027 general elections, asserting that the situation would normalise within weeks of the polls.

Akpabio made the claim on Tuesday at the commissioning of the Nigerian Revenue Service Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, where President Bola Tinubu performed the inauguration.

“Insecurity is increasing because election is coming, because people don’t know what to do again,” Akpabio said.

“Immediately after election, two weeks after election, the insecurity will stop. The insecurity is being sponsored by people.”

The Senate President argued that political opponents of the Tinubu administration, frustrated by the President’s performance, had resorted to sponsoring violence as a strategy.

He also took a swipe at the opposition, singling out Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying: “Someone got six million votes and abandoned the party, abandoned the six million votes and went shopping for another platform — and they are blaming the ruling party.”

Akpabio urged Nigerians to remain patient with the current administration, which he said was on the right track.

He also praised the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Dr Zacch Adedeji, describing him as perhaps the most popular tax administrator in the country’s history. “Even in the Bible, people don’t like tax collectors,” he said. “Zacch has done very well and Nigerians are happy with him.”

The newly commissioned NRS headquarters is a 16-floor, three-tower complex with a capacity for approximately 3,000 personnel.

The event was attended by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, among other federal officials and governors.

Governors in attendance included Babagana Zulum of Borno, Charles Soludo of Anambra, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Hope Uzodimma of Imo, and Usman Ododo of Kogi.

President Tinubu had in June 2025 signed the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, which formally transformed the Federal Inland Revenue Service into the NRS.
