UCL: Man City defeat Copenhagen as Real Madrid edge past Leipzig

Phil Foden struck a crucial injury-time goal to put Manchester City in control of their Champions League last-16 tie with a 3-1 victory over Copenhagen, while a goal from Brahim Diaz secured Real Madrid a 1-0 win away at RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.

City extended their unbeaten run in Europe to 21 matches and will return to the Etihad on March 6 for the second leg, in between crucial Premier League fixtures against Manchester United and Liverpool to continue their title defence.

Kevin De Bruyne struck the opener after just 10 minutes amid a dominant start which should have seen them further ahead before Jack Grealish went off injured and an Ederson mistake allowed Copenhagen’s Magnus Mattsson to equalise.

Bernardo Silva however struck in added time of the first half to restore their lead and after Erling Haaland had hit the crossbar, and been denied by goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, Foden netted in the 92nd minute to move City closer to the quarter-finals.

Leipzig were energetic but wasteful early, while Madrid goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin, made numerous saves after the hosts controversially had a goal disallowed for offside.

Premier League: Haaland’s double over Everton sends Man City to top

The German club were made to pay early in the second half when Diaz opened the scoring.

Drafted into the side in place of the injured Jude Bellingham, Diaz danced past three Leipzig defenders before curling an inch-perfect shot inside the far post.

Man City are back in Premier League action at home to Chelsea on Saturday, February 17.

Their second leg with Copenhagen at the Etihad is on Wednesday, March 6.

RB Leipzig are next in action at home to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Marco Rose’s side then travel to champions Bayern Munich on Saturday, February 24.

Real Madrid’s next game is at Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga on Sunday, February 18.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side then host Sevilla on Sunday, February 25.
