UNILORIN student commits suicide after lending lover N500,000

A 20-year-old student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) in Kwara State, Sanni Hameedat, has reportedly committed suicide after lending her lover the sum of N500,000.

It was gathered that the student met her lover, whose name has yet to be ascertained, on the social media platform, Snapchat.

Announcing her demise via a statement on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, the management of the private hostel where Hameedat resided, Rubiks, disclosed that the student was undergoing her SIWES programme before the incident occurred.

The hostel management stated that the student committed suicide by drinking a bottle of pesticide, popularly known as Sniper, after she was unable to repay the money borrowed from loan apps.

It said: “The cause of the suicide was traced to financial misappropriation. She was entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother. She crossed paths with a guy on Snapchat and developed a friendship.

“When the boy claimed that his mother was battling breast cancer and urgently needed N500,000, the compassionate and emotional lady decided to help him by lending him half of the N1 million she held for her mother. And the boy promised to repay the borrowed money.

“However, when her mother needed the money back, the boy abruptly cut off all up all contact, blocking her. This left her deeply troubled and in order for her to make up the missing N500,000, she resorted to borrowing money from various apps.”

The management revealed that Hameedat later managed to gather N450,000 from the loan apps and added her savings of N50,000 to make up the borrowed N500,000.

It, however, noted that the UNILORIN student, after ingesting the pesticide, was rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) where she was confirmed dead.

Meanwhile, the management of UNILORIN has yet to speak on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
