United Nigeria Airlines has grounded one of its aircraft following a bird strike during landing in Abuja, the fifth such incident involving the airline’s fleet this year.
The airline confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that a CRJ-900 operating Flight UN0579 from Kano encountered the bird strike while approaching the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The aircraft was immediately withdrawn from service in line with safety protocols.
“In line with our strict and uncompromising safety standards, the aircraft has been immediately withdrawn from operations to undergo comprehensive technical inspections and any required maintenance before being returned to service,” the airline said.
The incident is expected to disrupt flight schedules across the airline’s network. United Nigeria Airlines appealed for patience from passengers, assuring them that safety remained its highest priority.
“Some flights across our network may not operate as scheduled; however, safety remains our highest priority. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this unforeseen development may cause to our passengers’ travel plans,” it added.
While acknowledging the recurring nature of the incidents, the airline maintained that all five cases had been handled in full compliance with aviation safety regulations and established operational procedures.
The airline further reaffirmed its commitment to safe and reliable operations, saying it would “continue to take all necessary measures to optimise our operations and exceed the expectations of our passengers.”
