University clarifies attack on student by phone snatchers

A 200-level Biology Education student of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Maryam Yakeem, has been attacked by suspected phone snatchers near the institution’s main campus in Itas/Gadau Local Government Area.

According to reports, four assailants approached the student and demanded her mobile phone.

Eyewitnesses said the situation escalated when she resisted, prompting one of the suspects to attack her with a sharp object before forcefully taking the device.

The attackers reportedly inflicted multiple injuries on her face and other parts of her body before fleeing the scene.

She was later rushed to a nearby medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment. Sources indicated that she may be referred to another hospital depending on her condition.

Confirming the incident, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan, clarified that the attack occurred outside the campus, contrary to earlier reports suggesting it took place within the school premises.

He described such reports as misleading, noting that the institution has maintained a secure environment through ongoing collaboration with security agencies.

Hassan added that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Fatimah Tahir, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to the safety of students and staff, stating that no security breaches have been recorded within its campuses.

The management also expressed concern over the circulation of unverified reports online, warning that such information could create panic and erode public trust.

Following the incident, the university’s Chief Security Officer and the Dean of Students’ Affairs visited the victim at the hospital to ensure she received adequate care.

The institution confirmed that the student is now in stable condition, while the Vice-Chancellor extended her sympathy and urged calm among the university community, assuring that efforts are being intensified to enhance safety both on and off campus.
