The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the opening of applications for the 2026 cohort of the EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Programme, inviting qualified Nigerian students seeking higher education opportunities in the United States to apply.
According to a notice by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, the application window opened on June 15 and will close on June 30, 2026.
The programme, coordinated by the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Mission through EducationUSA Nigeria, is designed to support academically outstanding Nigerian students with leadership potential in gaining admission into higher education institutions in the United States.
The Mission said the initiative aims to expand access to U.S. education while also promoting American leadership, commercial diplomacy, and shared economic interests between both countries.
It noted that the 2026 cohort aligns with the “Freedom 250” celebration, which marks 250 years of American leadership, innovation, and democratic values.
According to the statement, the programme is also intended to promote secure and well-regulated student participation in U.S. higher education, with emphasis on proper visa use and compliance with immigration regulations.
Priority consideration will be given to high-achieving students whose academic backgrounds and career interests align with U.S. strategic priorities in fields such as STEM, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies.
The Opportunity Fund Programme provides financial assistance to cover key upfront costs such as standardised test fees, application fees, and related expenses.
To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership potential, research capability, and a clear intention to pursue post-secondary education in the United States, alongside a commitment to visa compliance and programme integrity.
Applicants are required to submit a completed application form, academic transcripts, a personal statement, evidence of achievements, and other supporting documents before the June 30 deadline.
