U.S. President Donald Trump said in a social media post that interim authorities in Venezuela would transfer between 30 million and 50 million barrels of oil to the United States.
In the statement, Trump said the crude — described as “high-quality, sanctioned oil” — would be sold at market price, with the proceeds to be controlled by the U.S. president to “benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States.”
He added that the plan would be carried out “immediately,” overseen by the U.S. energy secretary, and that the oil would be moved by storage ships and delivered directly to American ports.
The message did not provide details on the terms of the arrangement, the mechanism for managing the funds, or whether the governments of both countries had formally agreed to the deal.
There has also been no independent confirmation from U.S. or Venezuelan officials.
The post comes amid ongoing debate over sanctions, global energy supply, and efforts to stabilize Venezuela’s economy and politics.
Analysts say any transfer of sanctioned oil would typically require complex legal approvals and international coordination.
