We will survive Kano despite Gov Yusuf’s defection — NNPP

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) says it will withstand its internal crisis in Kano State, despite dissolving all party structures and speculation over a possible defection by its only sitting governor, Abba Yusuf.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, spoke on ARISE News on Saturday, stressing that the dissolution of the Kano State Executive, local government, and ward leadership was necessary to restore order and uphold the party constitution.

“The crisis began when some members attempted to remove the state chairman through unconstitutional means,” Johnson explained. “Our constitution does not allow an officer at the state level to be removed from his ward. It was an illegality, and we stepped in.”

Johnson added that dissolving all structures from the state down to the ward level was the most effective way to stabilise the party. Caretaker committees are expected to be appointed soon to manage party affairs in the state.

Addressing concerns that the move could push Governor Yusuf toward the All Progressives Congress (APC), Johnson dismissed the claim, saying the party’s actions were pre-emptive and aimed at maintaining stability.

He confirmed that no discussions about defections had taken place between Yusuf and former NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso.

He acknowledged divisions within the party but emphasized that the NNPP would not allow any faction to act independently.

Johnson also noted that ongoing national-level negotiations and consultations would help position the party strategically ahead of the 2027 elections, though no final decisions on leadership or presidential ambitions have been made.

“Our leadership is focused on maintaining stability and strengthening the party ahead of the electoral cycle,” he said, expressing confidence that the NNPP will emerge firmly positioned for the upcoming elections.
