We’ll resist any poll manipulation — Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that the opposition will resist any attempt to manipulate the 2027 general elections, insisting that the outcome of the polls must reflect the will of Nigerians.

Makinde made the remarks on Friday while addressing journalists after a closed-door meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed in Bauchi.

The governor warned against electoral malpractice, stressing that opposition parties would not allow the democratic process to be undermined.

“They must not suppress the will of the people. They must not suppress whatever decision they are going to take, and we will ensure that does not happen. We will not allow any electoral malpractice. The outcome must reflect the voice of Nigerians,” he said.

Describing the current political atmosphere as challenging, Makinde said Nigeria was passing through one of its most difficult democratic moments but expressed confidence that the situation would improve.

“The political environment is very toxic. It is the darkest moment, but when the day is about to break, that is usually the darkest point. I believe a new dawn is coming for Nigeria,” he stated.

Speaking on his chances in the 2027 presidential election, Makinde said he remained optimistic, citing his victory in the 2019 Oyo State governorship election despite the dominance of the then-ruling All Progressives Congress at both the state and federal levels.

He maintained that elections are ultimately decided by the people, expressing confidence that Nigerians would make their voices heard at the polls.

On security in Oyo State, the governor said recent incidents should not overshadow the state’s record of relative peace over the past several years.

According to him, the abduction of schoolchildren in Orire Local Government Area occurred shortly after he declared his presidential ambition, noting that the state had enjoyed years without similar incidents.

Earlier, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed said his meeting with Makinde focused on governance, security and the future of the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

He praised Makinde’s performance in Oyo State, describing him as a leader whose developmental achievements had earned national recognition.

Mohammed said both governors also exchanged ideas on tackling insecurity and strengthening the opposition, adding that Makinde was committed to promoting issue-based campaigns and responsible leadership ahead of the next general election.
