Why I will not remarry — Aisha Buhari

Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has declared that she has no intention of remarrying following the death of her husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari. According to her, the decision is not rooted in morality but in practicality.

Speaking during the launch of a new 600-page biography of her late husband titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs. Buhari explained that having had one husband and now grandchildren, she prefers to focus on her family rather than enter into another marriage.

The book launch took place at the State House, Abuja, where the biography’s author, Dr. Charles Omole, chronicled General Buhari’s life from his early years in Daura, Katsina State, until his final moments in a London hospital in mid-July 2025.

In the biography, Mrs. Buhari’s stance on remarriage is framed as a deliberate personal choice that rejects cultural expectations that often label widows as either betrayers for remarrying or saints for choosing not to.

Instead, she chose to “name the contours of her future” on her own terms.

Looking ahead, she outlined plans for a quieter public life, splitting her time between family, philanthropy and travel.

She intends to cherish time with her grandchildren and continue her work through the Aisha Buhari Foundation and a cardiovascular and medical centre in Kano that has already performed over 200 procedures.

Dr. Omole described her choice as a personal reset after years in the political spotlight, underscoring her desire to let others lead while she focuses on healing and family life.
