Why Nigerian international airports lack Wi-Fi —Keyamo

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has revealed that a long-standing dispute between two aviation agencies is the reason Nigerian international airports lack Wi-Fi.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Keyamo explained that the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had been in disagreement over which agency is responsible for providing Wi-Fi.

“NAMA argued that, by law, it oversees all navigation and communication equipment, while FAAN insisted Wi-Fi falls under airport infrastructure, which is within its jurisdiction,” Keyamo said.

The deadlock, he noted, stalled progress until 2023, when he intervened and assigned the responsibility to NAMA. However, by the time the matter was resolved, the 2024 budget had already been approved, leaving no room for funding the project.

Keyamo assured Nigerians that Wi-Fi provision has now been included in the 2025 budget, and Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos is expected to have functional Wi-Fi by the end of 2025.

He added that the ministry is exploring a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to implement the project efficiently and sustainably.
